THE HEMINGWAY SHORT STORY COMPETITION


Prize: $1000 first prize and two $500 runners-up prizes. The first prize winner also receives air fare and lodging to attend the festival and participate as a Café Critique leader.

Eligibility: Open to writers whose fiction has not appeared in a nationally distributed publication with a circulation of over 5,000. The competition is for original fiction of any form or style, and is not to be confused with the faux Hemingway contest for parodic imitations.

Judging: Since its inception the competition has been administered by writer Lorian Hemingway, granddaughter of the Nobel laureate, who personally screens the stories and passes on the top 25 to a final judge she selects. Randy Wayne White was the 1996 judge.

Rules: $10 reading fee. No manuscripts will be returned. Stories must be 3000 words or less.

THE HEMINGWAY FIRST NOVEL CONTEST


Prize: $1000 and literary representation for one year with a top New York agent.

Eligibility: Open to writers who have never had a novel published.

Judging: The contest was begun by writers Hilary Hemingway (Ernest's niece) and husband Jeffrey P. Lindsay, who screen the entries and pass the top manuscripts on to a final judge they select. George Plimpton was the 1996 judge.

Rules: $20 reading fee. No manuscripts will be returned. Writers must submit a copy of the completed novel along with a one- to five-page synopsis of the novel.

HEMINGWAY DAYS YOUNG WRITERS' SCHOLARSHIP


Prize: $1000 and airfare, lodging, and complimentary admission to the Writers' Workshop & Conference.

Eligibility: Open to high school juniors and seniors living in the United States who exhibit exceptional talent in the craft of writing and wish to pursue writing as a career.

Judging: The contest and a Hemingway Days Educational Fund was begun by the Hemingway Days Festival to encourage young writers and greater understanding of the world in which we live. The fund is supported by festival events and fundraisers conducted by the Hemingway Look-Alike Society. Judges for the event are Anne Hemingway Feuer, Ernest Hemingway's niece, and Writers' Workshop & Conference director James Plath.

Rules: Send six pages of fiction, poetry, or creative non-fiction--no more. No manuscripts will be returned. Writers must submit a copy of the completed novel along with a one- to five-page synopsis of the novel.
