Conques St. Faith - the depraved in Hell, closeups
The tympanum at Conques is unusual for its written commentary. The tympan can thus be read like an illustrated text, except that, as in the Bayeux tapestry, the text is the sculptural narrative iself and the carved titles function as manuscript rubrics, which organize and comment on the text. No written words are necessary, actually, to grasp the horror of the inferno, and the titles offer in effect very little commentary.
