Aulnay St-Pierre - Crucifixion of St. Pierre
The left portal portrays the death of the apostle Peter, who according to tradition was crucified upside down. Note the construction of the archivolts over both Peter and Christ: each arch stone is carved individually, whereas over the central portal, the images extend over several blocks of stone and are not confined within single blocks. The norm at Aulnay is that of placing sculpted images vertically within the space of the arch stone, as will be seen on the south portal. The central portal thus constitutes an exception to that norm, which further highlights its moral narrative.
