IWU Academic Programs

Engineering

Engineering builds bridges between science and technology. Engineers take theoretical principles of science and give them practical applications.
Engineers bring laboratory discoveries to the marketplace.
Students interested in engineering have a number of options at IWU, including participation in our 3-2 dual-degee program. In this program, students study at IWU for three years, taking a basic mathematics, science, and liberal arts sequence, and then spend an additional two years at an engineering school. At the end of the 3-2 program, students receive a bachelor of arts degree from IWU and a bachelor of science degree in engineering from the cooperating institution.
IWU has special affiliations with Case Western Reserve (Cleveland), Northwestern (Evanston, Ill.), and Washington University (St. Louis), which essentially means that students are assured dual-degree opportunities with these institutions if they maintain a "B" average at IWU. IWU also has special arrangements with Dartmouth College (Hanover, N.H.) and Columbia University (New York City), which facilitate participation in dual-degree engineering programs on those campuses. Of course, students can choose to attend any engineering school; for example, a number of IWU students have completed 3-2 dual-degree programs at the University of Illinois.
In addition to the dual-degree program, some engineering students choose to stay at IWU for all four years, earning either a B.A. or a B.S. in one of the more technical majors available on campus. These students may either particpate in a 4-2 dual-degree program or go directly to graduate school in engineering for a Masters Degree (or Ph.D.). It also is possible to enter a 2-2 program offered in conjunction with the University of Illinois. These options are not all equivalent, and should be discussed with members of the Pre-Engineering Advisory Committee.
