The Fall Meeting of SPS Zone 9 (with invited participation from Zones 8 and 11) will be held Friday and Saturday, November 20 and 21 on the campuses of Illinois State and Illinois Wesleyan Universities in Bloomington/Normal, Illinois. You are invited to participate in the meeting and present research or other physics-related activities in either an oral or poster session.
Tentative Agenda:The meeting will begin with a banquet in the Bone Student Center at Illinois State (maps will be provided in a future snail-mail) Friday evening at 6:00. The menu choices are given below. At 7:00 we will hear from Dr. Russell Huebner, the physicist in charge of policy and planning at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory. His presentation regarding the production and uses of extremely bright x-ray beams, as well as his considerable experience in the atmosphere of a major national laboratory, should be of interest to all physics students. A social event, probably a movie, is being planned for after Dr. Huebner's presentation. Oral and poster presentations will be held on Saturday at Illinois Wesleyan. Oral presentations will be 15 minutes maximum, which includes time for questions and answers. Poster presentations must be able to stand on an ordinary easel. Overhead projectors and easels for posters will be provided. Please let us know if you have special requirements, and we will try our best to accommodate them. If there is sufficient response, the meeting will extend to the afternoon. A light lunch will be provided in that case. A monetary prize will be awarded for the best presentations (any kind): $50 for 1st place, $35 for 2nd place, $15 for 3rd place, to be awarded at the closing general meeting.
Registration:You may register electronically by sending a suitable message to Dr. George Rutherford at sps@phy.ilstu.edu. Please register whether or not you are presenting or attending the banquet. If you are making an oral or poster presentation, please send a one-page abstract as an attachment, MS Word format preferred but not required. In addition, if you wish to attend the banquet, you must send a check for $15 payable to Illinois State University to the address listed below. Please also indicate your menu preference: Top Sirloin Steak with Mushroom or Bernais Sauce (indicate choice of sauce) or Chicken Cordon Bleu. The deadline for abstract submission is Monday, November 16, and the deadline for banquet reservation (payment included) is Monday, November 9.
Lodging:Blocks of rooms have been set aside for the meeting, some with special meeting rates. You must contact the motel and make your reservation. The room blocks are held until October 30.
