Aulnay - Facade, church of St-Pierre
Constructed in Poitevin style, with its low, triple-arcaded facade and lantern turrets, St-Pierre d'Aulnay is at once architecturally sober and decoratively sumptuous. On the left, note the 15th century Hosanna cross. These crosses, erected in the middle of churchyards, have largely disappeared, as cemeteries were ordered dismantled and moved to public ground during the Revolution. Hosanna crosses were the gathering place of the faithful on Palm Sunday. There, the celebrant would chant the gospel of Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem before leading the procession bearing palm branches, termed "hosannas".
