Le Puy - views of the nave
Built of a naturally black, volcanic stone, the interior of the cathedral is quite dark and is striking for both its massiveness and its sobriety. A few frescoes have nevertheless survived, among them a portrayal of the Women at the tomb, located in a chapel of the north transept. Upon the altar (leftmost image) is enthroned a black Virgin, whose renown drew huge numbers of pilgrims in centuries past. The current statue replaces an original presented, according to tradition, by St. Louis in the 13th century, and destroyed during the revolution.
