Aulnay south portal - Animals in foliation

Aulnay Portail Sud Rinceaux

The entrance to the south transept is bordered by these graceful beasts which, entwined in foliation, are suggestive of oriental manuscript illumination. Their primary function is to mark the limits of sacred space, but they also serve as a border for the visual commentary which rises above them.

The sculptor of this portal has left no stone uncarved - even the underside of the archivolt is decorated with figures seem, humorously, to support the principal subjects of the portal.
